Queen praises United Kingdom terrorism survivors in Christmas message

  • Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip

London, Dec 25 Britain's Queen Elizabeth II reflects on the "appalling" terrorist attacks in London and Manchester this year in her traditional Christmas Day message televised to the Commonwealth.

The queen, her husband Prince Philip and family members plan to attend a church service Monday near Elizabeth's country estate in Sandringham. "You weren't expected to be around that long".

In Manchester a few months later 22 people - including children - were killed when a lone suicide attacker detonated an explosive device as crowds of music fans left Manchester Arena following a performance by U.S. singer Ariana Grande.

Referring to the attacks which took place in London and Manchester, she will praise the "powerful identities" which "shone through" in the face of appalling attacks.

She also referred to the upcoming wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, by saying they look forward to welcoming new members into the family next year.

There were more deaths in June when three terrorists in a van ploughed into pedestrians on London Bridge then went on a knife rampage in Borough Market, killing eight in total.

The queen will also talk about the importance of home in her message, and the sense of community in London and Manchester after the capital's devastating Grenfell Tower fire and the militant attacks in both cities.

This is thought to be a reference to Meghan Markle, who will marry Prince Harry in the spring, as well as William and Kate's third child, due in April.

She said: "I don't know that anyone had invented the term "platinum" for a 70th wedding anniversary when I was born".

Her words about family were illustrated by photographs on her desk: her 1947 black and white wedding picture, the official photograph to commemorate the 70th wedding anniversary this November and portraits of her great grandchildren Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

There was only the gentlest of references to perhaps the year's most eagerly anticipated royal event, the engagement of her grandson Prince Harry to US actress Meghan Markle.

Elizabeth and Philip missed last year's service with the flu.

Ms Markle, who is spending Christmas at Sandringham with Harry and other senior royals, is likely to have watched the Queen's message with members of the monarchy.

The Queen writes her own Christmas message without seeking government advice.
