  • Hillary Clinton supporters cancel their subscriptions to Vanity Fair over New Year's video

"Volunteer work, knitting, improv comedy - literally anything to keep you from running again".

"I'm just so happy that the mainstream media-the leftist mainstream media, might I add-Vanity Fair actually chose to make fun of Hillary Clinton", Lahren said.

Steadfast Clinton supporters like Peter Daou expressed their outrage over the joke, decrying the reference to "knitting" as sexist.

A spokeswoman for the publication told TheWrap: "It was an attempt at humor and we regret that it missed the mark".

The video was swiftly condemned by prominent Clinton supporters on Twitter, including consultant and CauseWired founder Tom Watson, who called the video "the nastiest, most sexist disgrace". Among those to respond was actress Patricia Arquette, who tweeted her own proposal - stop telling women what they should or can do.

Mr Trump took to Twitter overnight to criticise the magazine for "bending over backwards in apologizing for the minor hit".

This wasn't the first time Trump has gone after Vanity Fair; he's sent dozens of tweets about former editor Graydon Carter, who led the magazine for a quarter century, over the years. Carter has been a critic of Trump's for many years, calling him a "short-fingered vulgarian" in the 1980s.

Others pointed out, however, that Trump may not have been confused at all, since Wintour is editorial director of all of Conde Nast's magazines.

Trump tried to weigh in with a tweet this morning, but he doesn't seem to realize that fashionista Anna Wintour is the editor of the fashion magazine Vogue, not Vanity Fair.

Before the president addressed it, the story hadn't received much coverage beyond online media, save for the outlet that inspires many of his tweets: Fox News.
