Tampa Bay Buccaneers sticking with Dirk Koetter in 2018

  • One potential landing spot for Jon Gruden is officially off the market

After weeks of Jon Gruden-to-Tampa Bay rumors running wild, the Buccaneers will retain Dirk Koetter after all.

Damiere Byrd #18 celebrates with teammates Brenton Bersin #11 and Bryan Cox Jr #91 of the Carolina Panthers after a kick return for a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second quarter at Bank of America Stadium on December 24, 2017 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Informing him of their decision immediately.

Entering this week's season finale against the Saints, Koetter and the Bucs are 4-11 while occupying the bottom of the NFC South.

Dirk Koetter should be back for next season. That, along with quarterback Jameis Winston still not playing as well as a team would hope a No. 1 overall draft pick to play, would be reason to think Koetter would be on the hot seat.

Koetter, 58, is 13-18 in two seasons in Tampa.

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell has come under scrutiny for opting to suit up starting quarterback Matthew Stafford in Week 17 despite the Lions officially being out of the playoffs. We spend so much time together - me, him, (quarterbacks coach Mike) Bajakian and those other quarterbacks - it's like a family.

Nothing to play for, no, the Bucs refuse to look at it that way.

This win helped Carolina clinch a playoff spot, taking a step in the turnaround needed after the abysmal 2016 season. There have also been games in which he's clearly been hampered by an ailing shoulder.

The Panthers defense had trouble containing the Bucs offense, even though the unit hasn't been known as overly powerful this year.

Though Tampa is 0-4 over the stretch, Winston has tossed eight touchdowns against just two interceptions, tallying a passer rating north of 112.7 in three of the past four games.
