  • Hundreds gather to greet George Weah as election authorities confirm he has won the Liberian presidency

Reports say the former AC Milan striker is all but the victor of Tuesday's run-off, as he now leads incumbent vice-president Joseph Boakai with more than 60 per cent of the votes.

President-elect Weah who read the prepared statement to the media in a rather relaxed state, also expressed thanks and appreciation to God for his blessings and wisdom which led him to this current state as Liberia's 24th President, and further assured Liberians of his government commitment to improving their livelihood during the reigns of the CDC led government.

The US also offered its congratulations to Weah and to "the people of Liberia on the successful conclusion" of the election, which it said, "represents a major milestone for Liberia's democracy". VP Boakai has since conceded defeat and congratulated the former world footballer of the year for his victory.

Weah responded: "I am honoured to join a new generation of heads of state".

Weah adds that "we have a lot to do together to accelerate the building of tomorrow's Africa".

The French presidency says in a statement that Weah accepted the invitation.

The lawmaker, who also congratulated Weah, pointed out that the hard work, persistence and steadfastness displayed by the football legend should be adopted by Nigerian youths in meeting their target-goals in life.

He will take office in January.

"Those chosen to serve will and must be dedicated to the ideas of grassroots social transformation. persons looking to treat the Liberian people through menace of corruption will have no place in this administration", Weah said.

Former soccer star George Weah has been declared victor of Liberia's presidential runoff vote held on December 26.

The 51-year-old Weah, a senator who entered politics after his 2002 retirement, led the first-round election in October but didn't receive enough votes to win outright.
