  • Neighbor of Mike Pence's holiday home hangs rainbow flag with the words Make America Gay Again

The Pence family's neighbors hung the above banner on a pillar at the end of the two houses' shared driveway, The Aspen Times reported Friday.

Pro-choice groups took to Twitter this month to solicit donations in Vice President Mike Pence's name.

U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence and family were greeted by a rainbow-coloured "Make America Gay Again" banner when they arrived at their Aspen, Colo. holiday home.

Pitkin County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Buglione told The Aspen Times that the sign was set up on Wednesday and continued to hang on Thursday.

According to Pitkin County Sheriff Joe DiSalvo, the person who came out to drape the banner on the pillar was "real sheepish" at first.

"We're not here to control your free speech rights", one of the agents said. In an email to the Aspen Times, Shannon Slade said she is a girlfriend of one of the daughters of the couple living in the house and that they posted the banner.

Pence has regularly been criticized for signing a law as IN governor that many say sanctions discrimination against LGBTQ customers.

As governor of Indiana, Pence famously supported the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which many feared would have allowed discrimination against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Pence has a long history of opposition to LGBTQ equality, including promoting conversion therapy, opposing funding to fight HIV/AIDS, opposing marriage equality, and promoting religious exemptions to anti-discrimination laws.

In 2006, Pence supported a constitutional amendment that would have defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

Pence has also fought to defund programs that help prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS and instead use government money to "change the sexual behavior" of LGBT people, a comment widely interpreted to mean paying for gay conversion therapy.

President Donald Trump once said of Pence, during a conversation about gay rights, "Don't ask that guy - he wants to hang them all", according to the New Yorker.
