The Sirleaf administration, elected in 2005, guided the nation out of the ruins of war and through the horrors of the 2014-16 Ebola crisis, but is accused of failing to combat poverty and corruption.

Tweeting in French in response to congratulations from French President Emmanuel Macron, he added that "we have a lot to do together to accelerate the building of tomorrow's Africa".

"Is it President Weah?" said the New Dawn newspaper, referring to a man who had the backing of heavyweights including former warlord Prince Johnson and apparently the covert support of outgoing president Sirleaf.

"I congratulate the victor, Ambassador George Manneh Weah, and pray that God will guide and guard him as he embarks upon the onerous responsibility of steering the affairs of our nation", he said.

The new president is expected to take office in January. He played for top local clubs before starting his global career in Cameroon, then moved on to AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain, where he became famous.

According to him, he had earlier placed a call to Weah, congratulating him on his prospective victory in the runoff election, and availed himself to help him in any way he may be found useful to advance the good of the country.

Weah immediately announced his intention to run for president, forming the Congress for Democratic Change to back his bid, but he faced immediate and cruel opposition.

Former Speaker of the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, yesterday congratulated a serving member of the Community Parliament, Senator George Oppong Weah, on his victory in the Liberian presidential election.

Vice President Joseph Boakai conceded Friday, congratulating the ex-soccer star.

While the 2017 election will give way to a historic democratic transition not seen in several decades, it is also the first time in many years in the country for a loser in a presidential election to consciously accept results and concede defeat to the victor.

The National Elections Commission (NEC) on Thursday declared initial results which gave Weah over 60% of votes cast whiles Boakai had about 38% with 98.1% of results certified. She led the country from back-to-back civil wars and saw it through a deadly Ebola outbreak that killed almost 5,000 Liberians.

The 51-year-old Weah, a senator who entered politics after his 2002 retirement, led the first-round election in October but didn't receive enough votes to win outright.

SAFA president Danny Jordaan who worked with Weah before, during and after the 2010 FIFA World Cup said he was elated for this historic moment.
