Other airports, including Denver International Airport, also said they were affected.

A two-hour outage in U.S. Customs and Border Protection's processing systems caused delays at some of the nation's biggest airports on New Year's Day.

On the first day of the new year, long lines of passengers entering the United States halted at worldwide airports in New York, Florida, Texas and California. "Thanks for your patience", Miami International Airport said in a Twitter post. All airports were back on line after wait times for travelers that were longer than usual, it said.

The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) system temporarily experienced an outage after a "technology disruption" Monday at major airports across the country, according to the federal agency.

"No one has been getting past JFK Airport immigration for the last hour".

"Just landed back in the USA and I'm stuck in the customs line because the border patrol servers are down nationwide", wrote Pearse Adams.

CBP officers continued to process global passengers using alternative procedures, but the agency acknowledged that travelers at some ports of entry experienced longer than usual wait times. It said Monday night that all airports were back on line.

Security remained the priority during the outage.

Customs officers still had security to national security databases, Garbis said.
