  • Civil rights activist Erica Garner dies from heart attack

Erica Garner, the oldest daughter of Eric Garner, died this morning in Brooklyn.

The 27-year-old mother of an 8-year-old girl and 4-month old boy had a heart attack on December 23 and was on life support in a Brooklyn hospital.

Three days later, Garner's official Twitter account issued an update stating doctors found that Erica experienced severe brain damage due to an oxygen deficiency while she was in cardiac arrest, followed by continued prayer requests.

Garner emerged as a prominent activist after her father, Eric Garner, was killed during an encounter with the New York Police Department in July 2014.

He was selling loose cigarettes on the sidewalk outside a store at the time. His death, which was caught on camera as he repeated the phrase "I can't breathe", became one of the most important events in the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.

When you report this you remember she was human: mother, daughter, sister, aunt.

"It's just sad to see her laying there and not the active Erica that we know", Sharpton said.

Out of Garner's six children, Erica was the most politically moved and proceeded to go on a mission to gain justice for her family, becoming a renowned advocate against police brutality. "The police are killing our people - that's reason enough not to fight amongst ourselves", she wrote.

Garner's heart attack was reportedly triggered by an asthma attack that she'd suffered with for years.

Mr Garner's last words, "I can't breathe", became a slogan for activists.

An autopsy by the city's medical examiner ruled Eric Garner's death a homicide.

Mayor Bill de Blasio called Garner's death a "horrible tragedy". "Because her heart was already broken when she couldn't get justice for her father". The city later settled with Garner's family for $5.9 million, WABC reported. She was particularly critical of de Blasio, noting that he defended the NYPD's decision not to release Pantaleo's disciplinary records after her father's death.

Erica Garner was also apublic supporter of Vermont Sen. "She left on her own terms".

Massive protests were held across the country to register anger over the grand jury's decision not to charge a white police officer in the death of an unarmed black man.
