  • Man Utd's Young facing possible ban after elbow v Southampton

Manchester United full back Ashley Young was banned for three matches yesterday for violent conduct.

Young appeared to elbow Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic in an off-the-ball incident which was not seen by the officials during the second half of the contest at Old Trafford. "I can fall down but it was really odd because I didn't expect that from him".

It followed an incident in the 51st minute of Manchester United's 0-0 draw with Southampton on Saturday. I can fall down but it was really odd because I didn't expect that from him'. I was surprised, and then next corner I asked him, "Why did you do that?", and he said, "I didn't do anything".

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino said after the match: "I haven't seen the replay but it is hard for the referee to see in one second what happened in all different places - but I have to respect the decision".

Craig Pawson, the referee, failed to spot the clash, which allowed the FA to punish the in-form full-back retrospectively.

Young will miss the New Year's Day match at Everton plus home games with Derby (FA Cup) and Stoke.
