IMA Calls Off Pan India Doctors' Strike

  • The Indian Medical Association has called for a 12-hour shutdown of all private hospitals in the country on Tuesday to protest the National Medical Commission Bill 2017

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has directed the panel to file its report before the Budget session.

Dr Narsinga Reddy of the Telangana IMA said, "Private hospitals across the state will close services from 6 am to 6 pm. The IMA headquarters declares closure of all routine services for 12 hours (6am to 6pm) from tomorrow", IMA national president Dr R. Wankhedkar said.

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda on Tuesday said he has spoken to the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and also put forth the "perspective" of the government, in view of the 12-hour countrywide strike called by the IMA against the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill. "Moreover the new norms will allow any foreign doctor to practice in India without any restriction as it does away with the screening test for foreign medical graduates", he said.

The bill also has provisions for granting permission to the doctors under Indian systems of medicine, including Ayurveda, to be allowed to practice allopathy after clearing a bridge course.

Parthiv Sanghvi of Indian Medical Association says that the central government has left us with no option but to call it a "black day" in the history of medical profession. The doctor's strike has held against the new proposal of National Commission Bill.

The Bill proposes a government-nominated chairman and members, who will be selected by a committee under the Cabinet Secretary.

IMA President expressed his apprehension that the bill will increase corruption in medical education and will push up cost of medical education very high while standard of medical education will fall definitely.

The IMA has strongly opposed the NMC bill, saying it will "cripple" the functioning of medical professionals by making them completely answerable to the bureaucracy and non-medical administrators.

An IMA statement read: "The NMC in the present form is not acceptable".
