Time's Up: Hollywood women start anti-harassment group

In November, a group of more than 700,000 female farmworkers sent the women of Hollywood a powerful letter of solidarity recognizing the plight of all women subject to sexual mistreatment in the workplace, but asking those in the spotlight to not overlook those who toil in the shadows of sprawling industries like food production, hospitality, restaurants, and elsewhere.

The initiative was formally unveiled in a story by The New York Times, and its mission was laid out in an open letter signed by hundreds of women in the show business.

Beyond the symbolism of red carpet fashion, Time's Up's legal defence operation will be administered by the National Women's Law Center's Legal Network for Gender Equity which connects victims of sexual harassment with legal representation. We stand with you.

The goal is to provide subsidized legal support to those who have faced harassment or assault in the workplace.

So far the project has been able to raise $13 million of its targeted $15 million.

Other Time's Up members include the actresses Ashley Judd, Natalie Portman, Rashida Jones, Emma Stone and Kerry Washington.

The initiative's goals also include promoting legislation to penalise companies that tolerate persistent harassment, and to fight against the use of non-disclosure agreements to shield sexual abusers.

Shonda Rhimes, executive producer of such television series as Grey's Anatomy and Scandal, was quoted in the Times as saying: "It's very hard for us to speak righteously about the rest of anything if we haven't cleaned our own house". "If this group of women can't fight for a model for other women who don't have as much power and privilege, then who can?"

The #MeToo movement seems to only have been a jumping off point for empowering women, especially in Hollywood.

Since October, when dozens of women began coming forward to accuse producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct, numerous men in prominent industries have been forced to resign over sexual harassment claims, including top editors at NPR.
