   DEADLY The killer strain of flu called H3N2 is striking people down across the UK

The Irish Health Service Executive (HSE) said a "small number" of people had died in the last fortnight after contracting the H3N2 strain - the one blamed for numerous deaths in Australia a year ago.

Flu season runs from October through the month of April, but now with so much more global travel, there are actually cases of influenza reported year round according to Livingston County Medical Director Dr. Don Lawrenchuk.

Two wards at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital are closed to new admissions and several wards have patients in isolation following an increase in the cases of flu.

Scientists and health experts have confirmed that this could be one of the worst flu epidemics to reach Ireland in years.

That's the message from health care providers, as this year's flu season gets off to "a fast start", according to Dr. Richard Lockwood, vice president and chief medical officer of Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield's Central New York Region. Common symptoms include fever and chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle and body aches, headaches and fatigue.

Hospitals have been overwhelmed with the influx of infected patients seeing an average of 10 patients a day that are admitted for flu-symptoms.

People who fall sick with "Aussie flu" will suffer from typical flu symptoms but they will be far more severe.

Dr Iley concluded: "You should see a GP if your symptoms last for more than seven days, or if you're in one of the high risk groups discussed earlier".
