  • Survivors of devastating Bronx fire allowed to return to building

The fire started in the Bronx building at about 5.30 a.m. and spread to multiple floors, express.co.uk reported.

Dozens of fire trucks were at the scene as thick smoke poured out of the building and flames were through the roof. Local media said the fire broke out in a furniture factory on the ground floor of the building.

NY mayor Bill de Blasio described the incident as "the worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city in a quarter century".

When asked about the injured, Nigro said "They will all be OK, thankfully".

One resident told NBC news that he fled the building, barefoot and bare-chested, along his three children into freezing temperatures that dipped as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius (minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit). But fire officials say almost two dozen people, including that man and his family, have been displaced by the blaze.

Firefighters are battling a stubborn six-alarm fire at a building in the Bronx. The cause of the fire is unknown.

"Praying for a swift recovery for all those injured", Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted.

The fire was put out several hours later and comes just days after a fire in the Claremont section of the Bronx killed 12 people. Some residents were allowed to return to that building over the weekend to gather belongings.
