Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, not LeBron James, is the leading vote-getter in the first NBA All-Star ballot update, released Thursday. Kevin Durant received the most votes in the Western Conference, and among front court players, with 767,402 votes, while Stephen Curry leads the guards in the west with 735,115. In voting for the West guards, Curry is followed by the Houston Rockets' James Harden (602,040) and reigning Kia NBA MVP Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder (438,469).

For the first time ever, the All-Star starter from each conference with the most votes will be named the team captain. Golden State's Draymond Green (325,612) was fourth.

The complete All-Star teams will then be unveiled January 25 on TNT (7 p.m. ET), although it's unclear if the order of the captains' picks will be revealed.

This is just the first of three voting returns prior to the 2018 All-Star Game that will take place at the Staples Center. The captains will be the leading vote-getter from each conference.

The fan vote will account for 50%, while all current players and a media panel will account for 25%, so although Simmons may not be in at the moment there's still a possibility for the players and media to get him in the game. Embiid has earned popularity both for his play and his engaging personality in a rebuilding 76ers team that figures to be among the Eastern Conference's best over the next few years.

This year's NBA All-Star voting, though, has shown that the generation beyond that may be foremost in the minds of fans. The NBA's head coaches will still select the 14 reserves, voting for two guards, three frontcourt players and two players at any position in their respective conferences.
