Arun Jaitley attacks Congress over its stand on triple talaq

  • Triple talaq bill pushed to Budget session will the Centre take ordinance route

Charging the BJP government at the Centre of misleading people on the Triple Talaq Bill, the Congress on Friday alleged that the ruling party did not want to pass the Bill but only use it for propaganda against the Opposition.

Both Congress, as well as BJP on Friday, issued a whip to all their Rajya Sabha members asking them to be present in the house today as fireworks are expected in Parliament over the contentious triple talaq bill and Koregaon-Bhima violence that rocked Maharashtra recently.

The Congress has to realise that the objections to the Bill from Opposition ranks is rather incoherent and that its stated position of support for the Bill "with modifications to make it stronger" will fool nobody. Government sources ruled out any possibility of an Ordinance on the Bill, stuck in the Rajya Sabha.

The Minister also termed the just-concluded session of Parliament as "successful", with the two Houses having passed 22 Bills in a session that had just 13 sittings.

Likewise, the objective was to rid the Muslim marriage of an abominable practice, Prasad had said while terming the Bill 'historic.' As for the charge that the BJP was out to exploit the Bill politically, well, if the progressive reform furthers the reformist image the party it can not be grudged the credit.

The fate of the Bill remains unclear, though the Government might not be averse to concede the Opposition demand for reference to a select committee. They are not thinking about ensuring justice to the Muslim sisters. "The bill should be sent to the select committee", Sibal told ANI. The upper house has been adjourned multiple times this week over the bill that was briefly discussed in the house.

"The Opposition obstructed the (OBC Commission) Bill with a meaningless amendment in the Rajya Sabha".

There are also concerns that if the law is passed, it could be misused as it gives anyone the right to complain to the police about the "triple talaq" to register a case and arrest a man.

The government hopes to find a breakthrough in the standoff over the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill which seeks to outlaw talaq-e-biddat or instant triple talaq and punish offenders with a jail term.

With no consensus on the bill even today, it's likely that the bill would be moved to the next session of the Parliament.
