HP has just announced a recall and replacement program for Lithium-Ion laptop batteries, with a multitude of models affected. HP has also claimed that there have been eight reports of battery packs overheating, melting, or charring to date.

According to the recall notice, around 50,000 units are affected, representing batteries shipped with notebooks and mobile workstations sold from December 2015 through December 2017.

Many of these batteries are internal to the system and not customer replaceable, but HP is providing battery replacement services through authorised technicians at no cost. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the recall on its site, detailing that about 50,000 batteries are affected in the US, adding that an additional 2,600 faulty batteries were sold in Canada.

Among the incident reports were three reports of property damage, totalling US$4,500, as well as one case where a customer suffered a first-degree burn to the hand. If you do not meet those requirements, you can download the fully loaded battery validation utility (available here), which will install the necessary frameworks. If owners discover they're subject to the recall, HP will send them a free battery replacement and help them get it safely swapped out.

The company also provided instructions on how to check if your laptop has a defective battery. Impacted customers should put their laptops in "Battery Safety Mode" and turn in the batteries for replacement as soon as possible.

"HP's primary concern is for the safety of our customers", it said.

Major electronics company HP is recalling thousands of laptop batteries due to a major hazard. They have also created a "Battery Safe Mode" update to install into your device to help prevent it from overheating.
