Amid suspension of military aid to Pakistan, US, India discuss bilateral issues

  • Met with protests Trump was the target of anger in Pakistan after the New Year's Day tweet

The official also said the suspension is mostly about the security assistance and does not include civilian assistance.

Earlier this week, U.S. president Donald Trump called a halt to aid to Pakistan in one of his infamous Twitter posts.

"If the funding is cut, the Pakistanis will obviously retaliate by ceasing to cooperate with the U.S.", Dr. Zubair Iqbal, an economist focusing on Pakistan, told Newsweek.

"If Pakistan today sees significant improvement in security achieved through a series of major counter-terrorism operations resulting in elimination of organized terrorist presence, then this has also directly served USA national interests as well as the larger interests of worldwide community".

The White House official has clearly disagreed that USA dumped Pakistan along with Pakistan's allegations of U.S. speaking India's language of India. "So we just disagree with that", said the official who was responding to a question to a statement made by Pakistan's Foreign Minister Khawja Asif who had alleged that the USA is "trumpeting India's lies and deceit" and is speaking the "language of Indians". It includes the Dollars 255 million in FMF (foreign military funding) that was notified to Congress in August of past year.

Asif's blunt remarks contradict the stand taken by the Pakistan Army on US President Donald Trump's latest accusation that Pakistan has given the US nothing but lies and deceit thinking of US leaders as fools and now is the time to stop the financial aid to Pakistan. Nothing's been reprogrammed. We're hopeful that we can lift the suspension and the aid would be able to go forward.

The money that has been suspended at this time does not mean that it will be withheld forever, she said. I think you can assume that you know things that are in the United States national security, things that might be related to nuclear issues, end use monitoring of equipment.

'There are considerable risks for the USA because Pakistan could retaliate in ways that would be very problematic for US regional interests, ' he said, such as curtailing intelligence cooperation and USA supply lines into Afghanistan.

Pointing to realities on the ground, Islamabad also sent out a grim reminder to the Trump administration that Pakistan alone could not be responsible for peace in the region, and Kabul too had a role to play.

The US has "a number of tools in its toolkit" and can "take unilateral" steps. But it could end up backfiring by diminishing the cooperation between the USA and Pakistan to combat terror groups in the region. And we want to indicate Pakistan our seriousness about the issue of dealing with safe havens.

The US, she said, will not be delivering military equipment or transferring security related funds to Pakistan unless it is required by law. "They may say it's a surprise, but what is no surprise is that the President has expressed his concerns, Secretary Tillerson has expressed his concerns, as has Secretary Mattis, and I imagine many other government officials having those conversations with Pakistan", Nauert said.
