  • Exploding Weather Myths: 'Bomb Cyclone' Explained

"As the storm continues to move northeastward, snow and rain will develop over parts of the Southern Mid-Atlantic Coast that will change over to all snow by Thursday morning".

All day Thursday meteorologists are going to be glued to the new GOES-East satellite watching a truly awesome extratopical "bomb" cyclone off New England coast.

It's the process in which a storm rapidly intensifies through a drop in pressure of at least 24 Millibars within 24 hours.

Florida Governor Rick Scott on Tuesday urged residents in the northern part of his Sunshine State to prepare for the cold. This could make the storm as strong as a hurricane, and 30-50 miles per hour winds will batter the coast.

According to the Weather Channel, the NWS in Tallahasse had to issue a winter storm warning for the first time in four years. "That's pretty rare. "So we'll see after all this is done whether get got any measurable snow anywhere".

Typical pressure rests around 1010 millibars, and most major rain and snow storms in the United States land around 995 or 990, the Washington Post reports.

The major winter storm will continue to impact temperatures in Florida all the way up to ME which is expecting blizzard conditions. In Charleston, South Carolina, one to three inches of snow and sleet are expected. The lower the pressure, the stronger the storm - which means that bomb-ranked storms can conjure up devastating wintry conditions.

The National Weather Service says a storm warning is in effect in the city and Nassau County from 1 a.m. Thursday to 1 a.m. Friday.

Most of the cancellations were in New Jersey, Boston and NY, which are seeing snowfall rates of up to 3 inches (7.62 centimeters) an hour and wind gusts up to 80 miles (128 kilometers) per hour. The timing of the storm is expected to bring snowfall from the Virginia Tidewater to New York City and New England during the day. So large is the storm's circulation it's expected to suck cold air from the Arctic that will bring on record cold temperatures in the northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
