Some demonstrators have called for the government's overthrow.

Iran's ambassador to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo slammed the US government's attempts to intervene in the domestic affairs of the Islamic Republic, Tasnim news agency reported Thursday.

Seyyed Hossein Naghavi Hosseini told Mehr News about the recent UN Security Council session and the United States attempt to bring up the topic of the recent protests in Iran and said "the U.S. has always interfered in the domestic affairs of other countries".

Briefing the Security Council, Taye-Brook Zerihoun, Assistant UN Secretary-General for Political Affairs, said the demonstrations taking place in Iran were a fundamental expression of human rights, and a powerful exhibition of fearless people who were so fed up with their oppressive regime that they were willing to risk their lives in protest. We will not be quiet.

US President weighed in on protests in Saturday, warning that the country's people want change and 'oppressive regimes can not endure forever'.

The U.S. called the United Nations meeting on Friday, portraying the protests as a human rights issue that could spill over into an worldwide problem.

Russia, a close ally of Iran's, agreed.

"We must be wary of any attempt to exploit this crisis for personal ends", France's Permanent Representative Francois Delattre said, adding that the Council must commit to upholding the nuclear agreement.

"This is nothing but another desperate attempt by the U.S. administration to escape, as it has lost every shred of moral, political and legal authority and credibility in the eyes of the whole world", he said.

Trump took to social media earlier this week in support of the protesters, saying that Iran is "failing at every level" and that it is "time for change" in Iran.

Khoshroo said Iran has "hard evidence" that violence is being directed from overseas, and went on to describe recent instances in which foreign citizens have incited violence in Iran.

The Security Council "rebuffed the U.S.' naked attempt to hijack its mandate", Mr. Zarif wrote on Twitter. The CIA declined to comment. Moreover, with President Trump imposing a travel ban on Iranians and calling Iran a terrorist nation, his statement about respecting the right of Iranians "to express themselves" is just some pretty words. "But I want to make sure that, yes, where people are peacefully protesting they have have the right to peaceably protest, but that they are not also manipulated by other forces that are equally as abhorrent as the Iranian regime". Due to the Trump administration, it's not only watching, it's also acting.

Tens of thousands gathered across Iran yesterday in a show of strength for the regime after days of deadly unrest, with state television showing crowds marching through several cities.

Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif pointed to Mr. Trump's own previous comments voicing support for the Iranian people, saying the United States of America leader had an "odd way of showing "such respect" for Iranians".
