Jon Gruden named Raiders' coach

  • Gruden returns as Raiders' head coach

The announcement was made about 90 minutes after Gruden worked as the analyst on ESPN's coverage of the AFC playoff game at Kansas City between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tennessee Titans.

He will be introduced by the Raiders at a media conference on Tuesday and replaces Jack Del Rio, who was sacked on December 31.

Multiple media outlets reported that Gruden will receive a 10-year, $100 million contract, though the team did not confirm the terms of the deal.

Gruden will replace Jack Del Rio, who went 25-23 in three seasons with the franchise. "We congratulate you as you head back to the sideline with the Raiders". The defence struggled mightily before a late-season switch from fired co-ordinator Ken Norton play-caller John Pagano. His Buccaneers beat the Raiders 48-21 in Super Bowl XXXVII. Raiders have rehired coaches before but the results were not what they were hoping. He returned to 2004, and in four seasons ended up with a 30-34 record, leading the Redskins to two playoff appearances.

It's official, Jon, even if the Raiders haven't yet issued a statement. Great legacy on Monday Night Football.

Last Wednesday, Gruden appeared on "Golic and Wingo" to talk about his answer the obvious question: Is he going to be the Raiders' next coach? It won't happen Saturday, because Gruden has obligations with his current employer, ESPN, and it won't be Monday because that's when he's expected to "interview" for his new gig. In 2011 he was on camera for the Outback and Orange Bowl games.
