  • Latte levy: Coffee cups could be banned by 2023

In a 37-page report on disposable coffee cups, the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee also proposed banning disposable paper cups entirely by 2023 if they are not all being recycled.

MPs across the country are calling for a 25p charge on takeaway coffee cups to be introduced in a bid to tackle waste - but what would that mean for businesses in Lincoln?

The committee said that 2.5 billion disposable cups are thrown away in the United Kingdom each year.

"Almost none are recycled and half a million a day are littered". The committee said that if the recycling target is not met then disposable coffee cups should be banned. This helps support better coffee cup disposal and reduces contamination, which is the biggest challenge in the recycling process.

"We only get one or two of them, as they're so hard to recycle due to their plastic coating, which has to be treated differently", Carol said.

"We found that this did not move the needle in the way we thought it might".

"Indications are that introducing a tax on coffee cups will significantly deter shoppers, with over one third saying it would negatively affect how often they visited their local high street", said Neil Whittall, chairman of the Paper Cup Recovery and Recycling Group.

A 5p charge on coffee cups was first proposed by the Liberal Democrats after it emerged previous year that only one in 400 was being recycled.

"At the same time, we will redouble our efforts to ensure that drink-in customers are always offered a ceramic cup, thus cutting paper use even further", added Starbucks. Reusable cups will be promoted alongside the charge, the revenue from which will go towards a "comprehensive behaviour change study" run by Hubbub.

A charge has worked well to reduce the number of plastic grocery bags.

"With all the will in the world we can't make that change and we wish we could", he said.

Additionally, it said that producers needed to pay more for packaging that proved hard to recycle, and that labeling needed to be improved so that consumers knew how to properly dispose of their cups.

"The public needs a simple, United Kingdom wide solution, one which is made possible by the introduction of an on-the-go waste management infrastructure".

The Daily Mail has led calls to "curb the cups" and crack down on plastic, campaigning to protect the environment with measures such as a deposit scheme for plastic bottles and the 5p levy on disposable plastic carrier bags.

Foster added that it would also encourage cafes to use "traditional cups and mugs rather than hand out single-use cups". About two dozen London cafés will test out a seven-cent fee for drinks served in disposable cups, coupled with "prominent marketing of reusable cups".
