  • Three and a half year in jail for Lalu Prasad Yadav

RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav sentenced to 3.5 years in jail and Rs 5 lakh fine by Ranchi CBI court in a fodder scam case.

Lalu's son Tejaswwi Yadav, who alleged political vendetta behind the case, stated that his father was not afraid of the verdict.

It is unclear whether the 69-year-old will be able to walk out of jail in the near future. The former Chief Minister, who was in Ranchi's Birsa Munda Jail, received his sentence through video-conference.

Earlier, during Saturday's court proceeding, Special CBI Court judge Shiv Pal Singh did not let go off a chance to take a jibe at the convicts in the case. The Special CBI Court was supposed to sentence the convicts on January 3.

Lalu and others were convicted in the case on December 23.

The CBI court had acquitted another former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra and five others in the case, relating to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 84.5 lakh from the Deoghar district treasury between 1990 and 1994.

He was fined Rs 5 lakh for each case, failing which he would serve another six months in jail, a CBI counsel said.

At the emergency meeting of the party today, Tejashwi Yadav said the people were with Lalu Yadav. However, it did cost him his Lok Sabha seat.

In the fodder scam case, out of 22 accused, 16 were convicted.

If the quantum of sentence was less than three years, thebail plea would have been moved before the trial court itself, he said.

While quoting party's state president Ramchandra Purve, it is reported by the media sources that, Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of Opposition and Lalu's son, is likely to become the party's CM face for the 2020 Assembly post.

"This is the end of a chapter that started with Laluji's leadership, where there was politics of corruption, nepotism and non-governance", Tyagi told reporters.
