Rain washes out day three at Newlands in finely-balanced test

Vernon Philander took career best figures of 6/42 to bowl India out and help South Africa record a 73-run victory in the first Test.

The first test provided plenty of entertainment right from day one, as neither side was willing to grab the game by the scruff of the neck. However, it will be tough ask for the Indian batsmen who were bundled out for 209 in their first innings.

India's hopes of overhauling South Africa's first innings total of 286 rested largely with Cheteshwar Pujara, who was unbeaten on 26, scored off 91 balls. India has never won a series in South Africa, losing five of the six it has played.

The day three play was called off after heavy rainfall continued to lash Cape Town on Sunday.

South Africa opener Elgar then nearly collected a pair when the hosts began their second innings, the left-hander pulling his first ball just out of reach of Mohammad Shami at mid-on having nicked off third delivery in his first knock at Newlands.

India were 4-76 at lunch, adding just 48 runs for the loss of one wicket in 25 overs against South Africa's four-pronged pace attack during the morning. Much needed rain for the city of Cape Town then washed out the entire day 3 with the match hanging agonizingly in the balance.

The South African seamers had other ideas though as Philander, Kagiso Rabada and Morné Morkel ripped through the Indian batting line up with great skill and aggression.

India was chasing a target of just 208 to win, but came unstuck against South Africa's quick bowlers on the kind of fast, bouncy pitch the Indians would have been expecting to be tested on in South Africa.

In the series against England, the South African pacer sustained a shoulder injury that kept him out for two Tests but he suffered a major setback when he broke his shoulder bone during the Perth Test against Australia which sidelined him for 13 months.
