"Harvey Weinstein isn't here tonight because, well, I've heard rumors that he's insane and hard to work with".

This year, however, it was U.S. comedian's Seth Meyers' turn to take the reins (although he did enlist the help of a few of the stars to deliver some of his punch lines).

Later during the show, which saw Sterling K. Brown, Nicole Kidman and Elisabeth Moss among the night's first winners, Meyers took aim at USA president Donald Trump, pointing to Seth Rogen, who once upset North Korea with film The Interview. But Meyers took the issue head-on and, following some opening remarks, smartly ceded the floor to women, people of color and queer people to make some of the jokes that he, as a straight white guy, couldn't really make. This is the beginning of the awards season, and thus the first show to address all the sexual scandals that came to light in 2017 (and show no signs of abating in 2018). That business was handled right up front in the opening speech from Seth Meyers who spent much of his monologue addressing all the scandals that have engulfed the entertainment world of late.

"It seems like this moment should be a moment of optimism", Meyers told The New York Times in an interview ahead of the Globes. The audience audibly groaned when he predicted that Weinstein would be "the first person ever to be booed in the In Memoriam".

"Good evening ladies and remaining gentlemen", Meyers said to kick off his monologue.

When the audience loudly reacted to the joke, Meyers added, "It'll sound like that". And they said, "It's at a hotel", and long story short, I'm your host tonight. "For example, I was happy to hear they're going to do another season of "House of Cards".is Christopher Plummer available for that, too?"

"It's a total message of solidarity and support, community within our industry and also letting women in other industries know that they have our support too", she said, adding that "I'm bringing one of my best friends with me and she'll be wearing black also".

Making an oblique reference to the exploitation at the upper echelons of Hollywood, Seth Meyers explained why he was chosen to host the awards gala - he described himself as "a man with completely no power in Hollywood".

"Billy Eichner, who is openly gay, got the privilege of wrapping this joke: "'Call Me By Your Name" is nominated for Best Motion Picture.

In his 10-minute plus spiel, Meyers took aim at Hollywood's powerful men and the sexual abuses many of them have been accused of.

"It's been years since a white man has been this nervous in Hollywood".
