National Football League looking into whether Raiders violated Rooney Rule

  • Oakland Raiders new head coach Jon Gruden right smiles as he listens to a question from former Raiders player Charles Woodson as he sits next to owner Mark Davis during an NFL football press

The Raiders hired two African-Americans to their staff on Thursday in defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley (former Alabama Crimson Tide defensive backs coach) and running backs coach Jemal Singleton (former Indianapolis Colts running backs coach).

Gruden's hire provoked some suspicion nearly immediately upon being reported last week. Davis will probably regret saying that he met with Gruden on Christmas Eve, even though the shocked reports about that meeting fail to acknowledge that there were reports before Week 17 that the Raiders were pursuing Gruden, and those weren't just lucky guesses.

Under NFL rules aimed at promoting diversity, teams are required to interview at least one minority candidate as part of an open process for head coaching jobs.

"We are deeply concerned by reports that the Oakland Raiders' owner, Mark Davis, came to an agreement with Jon Gruden about him becoming the Raiders' next head coach before interviewing any candidates of color". The Detroit Lions got fined $200,000 when it didn't interview a minority before hiring Steve Mariucci as coach in 2003. Al Davis also hired Art Shell, the first black head coach in the modern era.

The Fritz Pollard Alliance has promoted equal opportunities for minorities in National Football League hiring since its founding in 2003. In a way, it led to a bogged down offense under former head coach Jack Del Rio.

According to NFL Media, both Tee Martin and Bobby Johnson were interviewed for the Raiders job but were believed to do so after the franchise made the decision to hire Gruden.

While Gruden and none of his three coordinator hires are minorities, Oakland did retain Thompson as tight ends coach from the previous coaching regime. If the stadium isnt ready for the October 14 game, the teams will play at Wembley Stadium, which will host in the following two weeks, in an order to be determined, the Eagles and Jaguars, and the Titans and Chargers. He has a career coaching record of 95-81.
