  • Legendary sports broadcaster Keith Jackson passed away at the age of 89 today

Keith Jackson, the down-home voice of college football during more than five decades as a broadcaster, has died.

"For generations of fans, Keith was college football", Iger said.

"You always know it's a big game when Keith's there", Joe Paterno, the Penn State coach, once said. Keith was a true gentleman and memorable presence.

Jackson also gave us the term "Big Uglies" for the offensive linemen who toil in the trenches and nicknamed Michigan Stadium "The Big House".

"Jackson was born on October 18, 1928, in Georgia near the Alabama state line".

His performance over the years, which also included Major League Baseball and NBA games, the Olympics and other sports in addition to his role as a college football stalwart, earned him entrance into the American Sportscasters Association and the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Halls of Fame. His final game was January 4, 2006, with Texas defeating USC in the national championship game.

"The NCAA can make anybody cynical", Jackson once told Sports Illustrated.

He was the first ever play-by-play voice of "Monday Night Football" in 1970. He spent four years in the Marine Corps before attending Washington State and graduating with a broadcast journalism degree.

By 1952, Mr. Jackson was calling Washington State games on the school station. Jackson had a wide-spanning appeal across the college football landscape because he had a deep understanding and appreciation of the sport from multiple angles.

A mentor to many broadcasters and the voice they grew up listening to, Jackson defined college football. After announcing his retirement in 1998, he was honored wherever he went to work games. In 1964, he moved to ABC Radio West as sports director and continued freelance work with ABC Sports before becoming full-time in 1966.

"The older I got, the more willing I was to go back into Southern vernacular because some of it's amusing", he said in a 2014 interview with "Fox College Saturday".

He was so entrenched in college football, that ABC wouldn't let him retire the first time he tried.

After initially saying he was retiring in 1999, the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame member announced a few months later that he would continue with ABC, by broadcasting primarily West Coast games, closer to his California home.

Jackson, a longtime resident of Sherman Oaks, Calif., and Pender Harbor, British Columbia, Canada, is survived by Turi Ann, his wife of 63 years.
