Zuckerberg Announces Making Major Changes to Facebook

Facebook is planning to make changes to the algorithms that determine the order content on our news feeds to make sure users see more posts from people they actually know. But apparently it's too much for users to handle, according to Facebook.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg goes on to write, "By making these changes, I expect the time people spend on Facebook and some measures of engagement will go down".

To that end, the company recently announced changes to its news feed - the never-ending thing Americans spend 25 minutes per day or so scrolling through. An avid Facebook user, Mr Arvind Konduru, said, "I often missed posts from friends and I thought they removed me as a friend".

Last week, Zuckerberg said his "personal challenge" for 2018 (something he's done every year since 2009), will be to fix Facebook. But is he throwing the proverbial baby out with the bathwater?

"Maybe (news organizations) need to get more involved in community groups and posting news within those groups, or interacting more directly with interest groups within Facebook", he said.

Parse.ly, an analytics company used by many top publishers, said in a blog post a year ago that data from February to October showed a 25 percent decrease in Facebook referral traffic.

The goal of the product teams will be to help Facebook's users find content that will lead to more meaningful social interactions, he said. But the changes may ultimately prove beneficial for both Facebook's users and its investors.

News feed changes mean users are likely to spend less time on Facebook. "This move, in particular, has the potential to rattle countless publishers and brands who rely on the social network to distribute and promote content". Those include personal posts from friends or family, and especially those looking for a suggestion or sparking a conversation.

We understand where Facebook is coming from.

It is a known fact that public content has exploded on Facebook.

Zuckerberg also said the News Feed change was meant to "make sure that our products are not just fun, but are good for people". "We can feel more connected and less lonely, and that correlates with long-term measures of happiness and health".

He quoted an academic research pointing out that interactions with the loved ones are more healthy and important for a person's wellbeing, instead of just reading news articles or watching shared videos.

While these changes are headed in the right direction, they're still based on an algorithm and algorithms can be gamed.

A large part of brands and media companies' strategies is to post articles and videos from their pages to engage consumers - items that aren't considered "meaningful interactions" between people.

"We started making changes in this direction a year ago, but it will take months for this new focus to make its way through all our products", Zuckerberg wrote in his Facebook post. It would take some practice of course-the existing curation is useful because it lets users see a handful of items rather than the hundreds or thousands of things people post-but a company as clever as Facebook can surely provide tools to winnow down the scope on their own. Friends and family will be shown more.
