Blue Moon in Qatar skies next Wednesday

  • The full'wolf moon that lit up the sky in January this year

This is one event that never ceases to excite astronomers around the world, who would focus their telescopes skywards on January 31 to view the rare "Super Blue Blood Moon".

This latest supermoon, however, is also dubbed a "blue" moon because it will be the second full moon this month. So, some people are calling the coming lunar display a "super blue blood moon". A supermoon can be up to 30-percent brighter and up to 14-percent larger compared to the average moon size and brightness we see most of the time. Blue moon occurs when two supermoons occur in a single month. And this Blue Moon will pass through the Earth's shadow.

Total lunar eclipses are referred to as "Blood Moons" because they often appear dark red in color. Viewers on the East coast will see the start of the eclipse just before dawn, possibly catching the the moon just beginning to take on a reddish hue before it sets.

But if you remove the blue moon element, which is just an effect of how we've structured our calendar, "Super Blood Moons" aren't all that rare.

However, those who are disappointed should be over the moon on January 20, 2019, when Daytona will be in a prime position to see a super blood moon. It's a blue moon, too. In the case of Wednesday's event, the month's previous full moon occurred January 2. But that means that the next month, February, is without a full moon.

The best time to enjoy a supermoon is right after moonrise and before sunrise, when the moon is sitting on the horizon.

When and where is best to see this thing?

And unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is perfectly safe to watch in the night with the naked eye. It's not so much of a mind-blowing event as the blood moon, but it's a little more visually significant than the blue moon. The moon will exit the umbra by 8.40 pm and the eclipse will end by 9.40 pm. The stars and moon appear clearer because we are looking out into deep space, rather than toward the galaxy's dusty, busy center.

Unfortunately, for those on the east coast, the moon will have already set by the time the eclipse begins. Unfortunately for MI, this means the moon will be setting in the west and undergoing eclipse as it sets in the western sky and the glow of day begins.

At 4:51 a.m. CST the penumbra - the lighter part of the Earth's shadow - will touch the moon.

Greatest eclipse at 5:30 a.m. The next time the trifecta occurs where it can be seen in America won't be for half a millennia, until August 31, 2528. Because that light is streaming along the Earth's edge at a very shallow angle, the greens and blues are scattered away, leaving only reds and oranges to spill into the shadow cone. The moon will not actually appear purple, nor will have it a cape-but January 31 is a great time to gaze up and enjoy the night sky.
