Precious metal miner Sibanye-Stillwater (JSE:SGL) (NYSE:SBGL) said Friday all the workers that were trapped since Wednesday night at its Beatrix gold mine in South Africa have been rescued.

Sibanye Gold spokesperson James Wellsted also confirmed that the miners had been brought to the surface and that there were no serious injuries. Zwane also told reporters that the storm had a negative effect on the mine, but they did not want to "speculate" on what happened.

While the blackout was caused by a storm, the committee believes the mine should have had a backup plan. As a result the majority of the night shift was unable to be hoisted to surface, it said.

Mr Wellsted continued: "We kept them there, rather than trying to use a secondary escape way, which would have entailed a four-hour walk".

"We haven't had this kind of thing before but obviously we will assess and see what we can learn from it", said Sibanye-Stillwater. Several ambulances arrived on-site overnight, said an AFP reporter at the scene.

Once the news was reported that the miners had been rescued, friends and family members started gathering at the mine to welcome their loved ones.

The Department of Health in the Free State will remain on high alert to assist the 955 miners who were trapped in the mine. South Africa is the seventh largest gold producer in the world, mining around 140 tonnes of the precious metal annually.
