  • BREAKING NEWS - Female student taken into custody after shooting two classmates inside Los Angeles middle school classroom

"There is no more safety threat to the students of this school".

Officer Drake Madison says reports of gunfire came in shortly before 9 a.m. Thursday at a school just west of downtown Los Angeles. She was taken into custody nearly immediately after the incident.

Police took the alleged shooter into custody immediately after the incident and the weapon was recovered at the scene, the LAPD tweeted.

Sergeant Edward Bernal of the Los Angeles Unified District Police Department said: "With the suspect in custody, the situation is under control". The district's interim superintendent, Vivian Ekchian, said that the school had been declared safe and offered thoughts and prayers to those who were hurt.

Spokesman Josh Rubenstein says the 12-year-old girl arrested in Thursday's shooting was being booked on a charge of negligent discharge of a firearm on school grounds.

The school was placed on lock down for around 20 minutes as police searched the school's premises.

Authorities said it was not clear how the 12-year-old got access to a firearm.

The boy was taken to hospital and is said to be in a critical but stable condition. Three other people, including two children and a 30-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries that were not caused directly by the shooting.

Jordan Valenzuela, 12, told The Associated Press he was in class when he heard the bang and screaming.

He said the sobbing girl told him: "I didn't mean to".

While how the gun was obtained is under investigation, L.A. city attorney Mike Feuer said this is a "call to action" for every adult who has a gun.

"I fear for my son's life", she said.

The shooting was reported at 8:53 a.m. local time.

"To see it on TV and then it's actually happening here and it's just scary and this world's insane now", another parent said.

Seventh grader Benjamin Urbina said, "What I heard was, there was like a pop". "It was loud. I didn't see her shoot". The shooting occurred at Sal Castro Middle School, which adjacent to Belmont High School.

Students and teachers also consider the event was unintentional, some even saying the girl brought the gun to show it to her colleagues and not to do something wrong with it.

The girl's grandmother told ABC 7 her granddaughter was "loving and caring".
