  • Mets' bargain signing of Todd Frazier reflects icy state of MLB free agency

The Mets made their long-awaited move to solidify their infield, and they did so with a familiar face in NY.

Todd Frazier is staying in NY. The New Jersey native was said to be interested in remaining in NY. The deal is for two years and $17 million, pending a physical, the sources confirmed.

The move also means Asdrubal Cabrera could be the Mets' projected starter at second base this season, rather than third. But he has stated he would be more comfortable at second base, which makes the signing of Frazier a sound choice. On days Wright plays, the Mets could theoretically push Frazier to first base in place of either Adrian Gonzalez or Dominic Smith.

The 31-year-old third baseman hit a combined.213 with 27 home runs and 76 RBI with the Yankees and White Sox last season.

The Mets added some instant pop to their lineup Monday, reportedly reaching a deal with free-agent third baseman Todd Frazier.

Frazier is the big infield bat that the Amazins' have been seeking, and they hope that his trend of 4 straight +25 HR years continues into 2018. With pitchers and catchers reporting next week, expensive players such as Moustakas, Jake Arrieta and Yu Darvish still don't have a team to call home.

In 2017, Frazier would get off to one of the worst starts of his career.

Andujar has hit everywhere he's been in the minors and a year ago hit.315 with 12 homers and 83 RBIs playing Double-A and Triple-A.

He also provides a stabilizing clubhouse presence on a team that for a while seemed to lack internal leadership.

Frazier, a two-time All-Star, is surehanded at third base, and his fielding saved about 10 extra runs over an average fielder past year, according to Baseball Reference. His 27 homers would have tied for second on the Mets previous year and his RBIs would have led the team.

Frazier was born in Point Pleasant, N.J. and went to Toms River South High School.
