  • Ronald Koeman confirmed as Netherlands boss

Ronald Koeman has been announced as the new national team coach of the Netherlands, signing a four-and-a-half-year contract, the KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) confirmed.

Koeman has made no secret of his desire to coach the Netherlands, and was disappointed not to have been appointed when Van Gaal left after the 2014 World Cup.

Koeman has been out of work since being sacked by Everton in October a year ago after a surprisingly poor start to the Premier League season and will take his first role worldwide role since working as an assistant coach with the Dutch team in the late 1990s.

He has been appointed on a contract that will run until the 2022 finals in Qatar, which begin in November of that year.

Nico-Jan Hoogma, now with Heracles, was also named a top sports director and assistant for Koeman by the KNVB.

"I've sometimes missed that in the Netherlands team and I think we can improve that a lot", he said.

Koeman said he will work players harder on the training pitch.

Koeman, who earned 78 caps for the Netherlands, succeeds Dick Advocaat, who had been brought in midway through past year after the sacking of Danny Blind in March.

As a player, Koeman wore Oranje 78 times, but he is now tasked with guiding Netherlands to Euro 2020 and then the World Cup.

In between, he played as part of the so-called "Dream Team" at Barcelona from 1990-1995 scoring the winning goal in the 1992 Champions League final.

The former Southampton manager was sacked by Everton in October after the Toffees won just two of their first nine games of the Premier League season.
