  • Black Lives Matter Charleston Leader Mourned After Fatal Shooting In New Orleans

Muhiyyidin Moye, also known as Muhiyidin d'Baha and Moya, was shot in the leg around 1am local time on Tuesday, according to police.

Muhiyidin Elamin Moye, who preferred to be called Muhiyidin d'Baha, was shot in the thigh while riding a bicycle in New Orleans, according to The New Orleans Advocate. d'Baha was taken to a hospital but died there later in the morning.

"He was transported to a hospital and subsequently died of his wounds", New Orleans Police spokesman Beau Tidwell said.

"[D'baha's] body is now in New Orleans, LA, and we are raising money to bring him home to Charleston and then have a memorial service/funeral for his family and friends", Weaver wrote on the website.

Police could not immediately provide a possible motive or suspect in the shooting.

Kim Duncan, d'Baha's sister, says that her brother had left Charleston in December "just to get away for a while", according to The Charleston Chronicle, an African-American newspaper in Charleston.

Last February, Moye leaped a police barricade in Charleston, South Carolina, and tried to take a protester's Confederate battle flag.

Bree Newsome, the woman who climbed a flagpole and unhooked the Confederate flag at the South Carolina State House in 2015, was giving a speech in downtown Charleston when d'Baha jumped into the crowd on live television. "I've never met anyone more committed and hardworking than him".

Moye was active in the movement for racial justice after the police killing of Walter Scott.

The community held a vigil at North Charleston City Hall Tuesday night where family and friends spoke.

"You represented the very best of America".

"We don't have many details, but will update as soon as we do", Weaver writes on the page before thanking supporters for their condolences.

"I am grief-stricken. I can't believe Muhiyyidin is gone".

The GoFundMe raised more than $20,000 in the first 20 hours of being posted, well over the $7,500 goal.
