Knicks' Porzingis tears ACL in left knee

  • Milwaukee WI – FEBRUARY 2

Porzingis started the game off strongly for NY, scoring 10 points with two rebounds, three blocks, and being 4-of-5 shooting, but his time on the court was cut short after he suffered a knee injury with just under nine minutes to go before the half.

The Knicks scored the next nine points and pulled within 12 points on a pair of occasions in the final quarter, but never got any closer. While X-rays came back negative, it's unclear whether he'll undergo further testing in the coming days to ensure he didn't aggravate the earlier injury. For the remaining games, this season the Knicks should (but knowing the Knicks they will not) also give more minutes to the younger players on the roster such as rookie Frank Ntilikina and sparkplug Trey Burke.

"I'll reach out to him tonight", he said. "I just went up there and just went hard and tried to get the ball and dunk the ball". And given the unlikelihood of NY finding a taker for exiled center Joakim Noah, he may wind up getting his wish and receiving more playing time after the trade deadline, particularly if the Knicks do move O'Quinn.

"We know that he's going to attack his rehab and post-surgery in the way that he prepares himself as a player", Perry said. Porzingis is a popular player for his wide array of skills at 7-foot-3 that led Kevin Durant to nickname him a "unicorn", but also for the personality he brought to NY when he arrived in 2015 as a teenager from Latvia.

The club had been comfortable with the idea of offering Porzingis an extension this summer.

Before his media appearance Wednesday, Perry dealt center Willy Hernangomez - Porzingis' close friend - to the Hornets for two second-round picks.

"His welfare is going to be the utmost importance, " Perry said. More importantly, they need him to prove he can accept the mantle of being the face of a franchise in NY - no easy task - and that he could more than live up to the responsibilities that come with it. "So this deal allowed us to do that". Porzingis said it was his "dream come true" to make the All-Star team.

The most obvious beneficiary of Porzingis' injury for fantasy purposes is Michael Beasley, who opened the second half of New York's 103-89 loss against Milwaukee at power forward after Zinger went down.

"We're evaluating the entire season", Perry said. But now they are better off playing for the lottery than the playoffs, and any moves they make would likely be with that in mind.
