"That military may be flying over New York City and Washington, D.C., for parades".

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the president's desire for a massive parade reflects his pride in the military. Macron has vocally opposed Trump on the Paris climate agreement and the Iran nuclear accord, but also made Trump the guest of honor at France's elaborate Bastille Day celebration.

Mattis says the Pentagon has been putting together options for a parade.

"The marching orders were: I want a parade like the one in France", a military official told The Washington Post. But France's tradition comes from a place of pacifism and global goodwill, with French soldiers carrying flags of the European Union and including troops from other countries.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham told reporters on Capitol Hill that a parade "makes sense", with some caveats.

The last time Washington saw anything similar to what Trump is considering was in June 1991, after the Gulf War, as Americans gave veterans of Operation Desert Storm a triumphant welcome home. At the time, the Soviet Union had yet to collapse - although it had begun to crumble - which might help to explain the freakish, Cold War feel of holding a parade in 2018.

Sen. John Neely Kennedy (R-Louisiana), said when you're the most powerful nation on earth, you don't have to show off like Russian Federation and China.

President Andrew Johnson called the parade in an effort to forge national unity, and improve the national mood just one month after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Some point out that it's a waste of taxpayers' money and that it's reminiscent of a dictatorship.

Zeldin, who's on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, pointed out that military spending for the upcoming year is already stretched thin.

"We did a quick snapshot on our Twitter account and it's by no means scientific, but last I checked 88% of people did not support this idea", he said. We are the world's only superpower and do not need theatrical presentations to demonstrate our power.

Even then, the event was something of a throwback, and attracted complaints about the cost and disruption. Tammy Duckworth, who has blasted "Cadet Bone Spurs", or from military families who have had to endure longer deployments, or from patients at Veterans Affairs hospitals who still endure long lines, or from those injured in non-combat accidents. Trump could start showing his appreciation for our troops by not using them as political pawns.
