  • United Nations alarmed by reports of Myanmar massacre

The report carries the bylines of Ko Wa Lone, 31, and Ko Kyaw Soe Oo, 27, who have been in custody since December 12 following their arrest while investigating the massacre.

Despite the men being detained for eight weeks, first in police custody and then in Yangon's notorious Insein prison, as well as being denied bail at their last hearing, the results of their controversial work had now been published by Reuters.

Reuters has published a detailed investigation into the massacre of 10 Rohingya men by Myanmar soldiers and villagers, that it says led to the detention of two of its reporters. The conditions in those camps are dire, as NPR's Jason Beaubien has been reporting.

Photographs acquired on the scene, along with testimonies from Rohingya refugees, were used in the latest Associated Press report on the use of mass graves to hide the Myanmar massacre of Rohingya prisoners.

Reuters said its reconstruction of the massacre drew for the first time on interviews with Buddhist villagers who admitted torching Rohingya villages, burying bodies and killing Muslims.

The military had said the slain men belonged to a group of Rohingya "terrorists", but Reuters reported that the men were "fishermen, shopkeepers ... two teenage students and an Islamic teacher", who had been picked out of a group of hundreds of Rohingya villagers, according to witnesses.

At least 688,000 Rohingyas have fled Myanmar's Rakhine state to Bangladesh since the Myanmar military launched an offensive in response to rebel attacks on government outposts on August 25 a year ago. According to the Associated Press, Berset said the return of Rohingya Muslims who have fled violence in Myanmar must be voluntary. The man said he wanted transparency, as well as to prevent such killings in the future, the report said.

The story also includes photographs of the mass grave site that were taken by Wa Lone.

A January statement by the Burmese army on the massacre of the 10 men said security forces were attacked by about 200 Bengalis with sticks and swords, and the security forces had opened fire into the sky, arresting 10 of the villagers while the remainder dispersed.

The account marked the first time soldiers and paramilitary police have been implicated by testimony from security personnel in arson and killings in the north of Rakhine state that the United Nations has said may amount to genocide.
