  • The Winter Olympics Are Stupid and Pointless Why it’s better to watch some snow melt and wait for the Summer Olympics instead

But it clearly meant something to the tens of thousands attending the opening ceremonies Friday as they watched athletes from North and South Korea walk together into the arena under a single Korean flag.

Photo Kim Yo-jong, the sister of the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, on Friday during the Olympic opening ceremony in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

The North only agreed last month to attend its first Olympics in the South, but each time Pyongyang considers sending a delegation to a sporting event in South Korea drama often seems to follow. It happened during a historic meeting between North and South Korean officials at Seoul's presidential palace.

The ceremony's signature moment delivered another flash of unity and deft political stage-managing, too.

"For our team meetings it is going through to English to South Korean to North Korean".

"We have no intention to meet the U.S. side during our visit to South Korea", Jo said in a terse statement reported by state-run news agency KCNA. It was their first joint march since 2007.

"We are all touched by this wonderful gesture. At this time we can not confirm (a cyberattack)", he said. In other parts of the world, peace has started with lesser moments than this.

The North Korean leader's doppelganger has not given up on causing another stir in the future.

On his flight to Alaska on Saturday, the vice president said he left Asia "encouraged that we will continue to work very closely to continue and intensify the maximum pressure campaign" against North Korea.

Since diplomatic efforts are "almost zero", sources said this may signal a "calm before the storm", with North Korea quietly preparing its next moves for after the Olympics.

The United Nations allowed the North Korean delegation to travel to South Korea for the Olympics, granting an exemption on sanctions against the repressive regime.

Couric, back on NBC for a night on loan from National Geographic Channel (which got a plug for her next documentary series), noted the South Koreans' use of "augmented reality" to create special effects seen only on TV.

Olympic committee organizers said the origins of the attack remained unknown. White House officials stressed that Pence had applauded only for the American team, but Asia experts said the vice president's refusal to stand could be seen as disrespectful to the hosts.

The North Korean cheerleaders charmed the crowd with nostalgic oldies.

The North has sent almost 500 people to the Pyeongchang Games, including officials, athletes, artists and also a 230-member state-trained cheering group after the Koreas agreed to a series of conciliatory gestures for the games.

Pakistani skiers will be participating in three categories during the Winter Olympics.

Pyeongchang was not supposed to share the spotlight with Pyongyang.

This has exposed the gaps between Seoul and Washington in how to deal with North Korea.

But North Korea has a habit of not letting itself be ignored when it comes to its southern rival.

Erin Hamlin of USA carries the national flag during the opening ceremony. Pence said that spotted signs throughout Seoul and PyeongChang that said, "thank you for your father's services for our country" that made him "a little emotional".

While U.S. leadership gave North Korea the cold shoulder as expected, North and South Korea are coming together at the Winter Olympics in ways that few could have really predicted. "This will contribute to inter-Korean peace". What's certain is that these Games, more so than any in recent memory, are about far more than sports.
