An Israeli F-16 jet takes off on December 9, 2014 at the Ovda airbase in the Negev Desert near Eilat, southern Israel.

"A few minutes ago, [Israeli aircraft]...targeted the Syrian Aerial Defense System and Iranian targets in Syria", a military statement said.

It marked the most serious confrontation yet in Syria between Israel and Iranian and Iran-backed forces that have established a major foothold in the country while fighting in support of President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war.

Tensions on Israel's northern border have been rising in recent months as Israel fears that Iran is entrenching itself deeper into war-torn Syria with its presence on Israel's borders growing in strength.

Conricus, IDF spokesman, maintains Iran is the aggressor and Israel's military is "ready for all scenarios".

Sources in Damascus said there were casualties among Syrian forces. And it all happens on one morning. The military said that attack caused material damage.

Earlier on Saturday, Israel's chief military spokesman, Brigadier General Ronen Manelis, said he believes Iran was directly responsible for the incident.

Russia, a member of the Security Council, expressed serious concerns about the latest developments in Syria and called on the sides to exercise restraint and avoid an escalation of the situation. "It is necessary to unconditionally respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and other countries in the region". The early successes of rebel forces pulled Russian Federation into the fray to support the Syrian dictator.

The Israeli Air Force launched what one Israeli military officer described as the "most significant attack" against targets in Syria since the Jewish state's war with Lebanon in the early 1980s.

Conricus declined to give details on the drone's presumed mission or whether it was armed.

This is also the first time in a long time - 30 years according to the daily Haaretz - that Israel has lost an F-16 in combat.

Israel later dispatched eight fighter jets to bomb the T4 military base near the Syrian city of Palmyra, from where it says the drone was dispatched and controlled.

The F-16 crashed in northern after facing heavy anti-aircraft counter fire from.

One of the pilots, the army said, has been seriously wounded as a result of an emergency evacuation from his F-16 jet that came under Syrian fire.

Israel then launched a second and more intensive air raid, hitting what it said were 12 Iranian and Syrian targets in Syria, including Syrian air defence systems.

The statement also said the drones - one of which Israel shot down - were being used against the so-called "Islamic State" or ISIS.

The regime said it intercepted the missiles and destroyed majority, according to SANA.

At approximately 4.30 am, local time, Israeli forces sighted a drone being launched from a site within Syria.

Authorities also accused Syria in November of violating the 1974 ceasefire agreement by "conducting construction work" in the northern part of the Golan Demilitarized Zone.

Russian Federation has also called for restraint in Syria to avoid escalating the situation.
