The broke the Guinness World Record for number of drones flown at the same time, the spokeswoman said. As more and more resources are invested in drone technology companies are eager to showcase some of the latest novelty and technical uses that drones could offer. Intel does still plan to put on smaller, 300-drone live shows every night for the medal ceremonies.

In fact, the tech giant launched 1,280 of its drones in December in Pyeongchang and pre-recorded the light show that aired on NBC's tape-delayed broadcast in the United States.

Intel is among the corporate sponsors for the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang that are taking the opportunity to promote its products and services before the global audience.

"The Olympics are a time when the sports and entertainment industries are buzzing with record-setting performances, so it was the ideal stage for Intel Shooting Star drones and our team to set their own kind of record", said Natalie Cheung, general manager of Intel's drone light show team. The fleet is controlled by one computer and one pilot. Each one of the drones weighed approximately eight ounces and averaged a 20-minute flight time. "But still, I do think the drone performance itself was very impressive".

A record-setting 1,218 drones shot into the sky and traveled to a nearby ski slope, first taking on the shape of a moving snowboarder and later rearranging themselves into the iconic interlocking five Olympic rings.

The Intel Shooting Star drones are a type of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) specifically designed for entertainment purposes, equipped with LED lights that can create countless colour combinations and easily be programmed for any animation. The performance also surpassed the 300-drone salute that was pre-recorded with Lady Gaga for Super Bowl LI a year ago.
