Frank Reich will be new Colts head coach, source says

  • Favorite has reportedly emerged for vacant Colts head coach job

The decision comes five days after the Colts announced they had a deal with New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

And the Colts had no problem poking fun at themselves.

The Colts don't plan to make an announcement until after a contract is fully executed with a new coach, according to ESPN.

The other challenge for Reich will involve his coaching staff. The following year, he rose to the position of quarterbacks coach, upon the retirement of Tony Dungy and Jim Caldwell's rise to his position, and becoming the wide receivers coach in 2011.

Reich served as the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles from 2016-17, where he won a Super Bowl this year. Ballard took the blame for the team's announcing the agreement with McDaniels before he signed the contract. "I feel extremely fortunate and could not be more excited for Colts Nation and the future of our franchise".

Reich was interviewed Friday and New Orleans Saints assistant head coach/tight ends coach Dan Campbell had talks with the Colts on Thursday.

Reich has been the Eagles offensive coordinator the past two seasons, and spent two years in the same capacity with the Los Angeles Chargers.

That left the Colts scrambling to find a replacement with the Scouting Combine and free agency on the horizon, but they appear to have landed on their feet by hiring Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Reich. The key for the Colts, though, will be the health of quarterback Andrew Luck.

"He has not picked up a football, but he is throwing balls, working on arm speed", Ballard said on February 7.

After McDaniels decided not to take the Colts job, Indianapolis' general manager Chris Ballard declared that their rivalry with the Patriots was "back on". "I didn't want the explanation".

NFL Network insider Mike Garafalo first reported that the hire was official.
