The sale of the Weinstein Company, which was supposed to be completed this weekend, was thrown in turmoil as the outgoing board of directors rejected a settlement offer by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman over civil rights violations.
The lawsuit states that any sale of the company "must ensure that victims will be compensated". The suit alleges that the COO failed to protect the company's employees.
The state's move comes days before the Weinstein Co. was set to finalize a sale of the beleaguered company to an investor group led by Maria Contreras-Sweet, the former Small Business Administration head under the Obama administration. The company later fired Weinstein. "Today's suit includes numerous employee-victim accounts of sexual harassment, intimidation, and other misconduct", said a statement from the attorney general's office.
Schneiderman's lawsuit includes dozens of specific examples of misconduct, including allegations that he told several employees, "I will kill you", "I will kill your family", and "You don't know what I can do". Rather than conduct any investigation in Weinstein's alleged behavior, HR alerted the mogul to any allegations made against him, the suit says.
A representative for Weinstein could not be immediately reached for comment Sunday.
