Trump laments that 'mere allegation' can destroy lives

  • White House Chief of Staff John Kelly walks with White House Staff Secretary Rob Porter to depart with U.S. President Donald Trump aboard the Marine One helicopter from the White House in Washington

His comments come after White House staff secretary Rob Porter resigned following reports that he abused his ex-wives.

Sorensen also resigned this week after being accused of domestic abuse by his ex-wife, White House spokesman Raj Shah confirmed Friday.

As the aftershocks of the accusations against Porter reverberated for a sixth day, Trump stayed out of sight on a rainy Sunday in Washington.

Senior Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway pushed back against the notion that President Donald Trump doesn't support women, saying he "shows great compassion" for women, and that she "frankly wouldn't work" in his administration if he did not.

The FBI informed the White House of these charges, which held up Mr Porter's application for a permanent security clearance.

Trump made no mention last week of the women specifically and offered no general condemnation of domestic violence.

"The result is that, one week ago, Rob Porter was a top aide to President Trump, and today he is out of the White House", she said. "In this case, the president has denied any of these allegations".

Sorensen's ex-wife, Jessica Corbett, has alleged that her husband of two years abused her psychologically and physically during their two year marriage.

He did a very good job in the White House.

Highlighting a timeline in which Kelly first gained full knowledge of the severity of the allegations and told Porter to leave within 40 minutes, Pirro pointed out that Kelly couldn't have known Porter was a wife-beater beforehand since Porter didn't walk around with a "scarlet letter". After Trump's campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, was arrested and charged with assaulting a female reporter, Trump asked, "How do you know the bruises weren't there before?"

Trump's tweet also struck a nerve with people who noted that assault survivors have their lives "shattered", too.

The president's loyalty to Moore, Sorensen and Porter - all of whom deny the allegations against them and have not been charged - may run counter to fast-moving social changes in the USA and beyond, but he is not the only figure to have expressed qualms about the role of due process when women make rape or domestic violence allegations. When you combine this with that letter he sent to them Thursday night assuring them that he takes domestic violence seriously, it suggests serious unrest in the West Wing and a chief of staff who is treading water with the staff he leads. It's a White House where distinguishing between right and wrong is prohibited.

Just like Porter, Sorensen strongly denies the allegations.

The infighting unfolded amid signs of a brewing shake-up in the West Wing. CNN's Jake Tapper tweeted back: "In point of fact, 2 ex-wives talking on the record to journalists and to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and one ex-girlfriend on background, with a photo of a black eye and a police report, is not 'a mere allegation'".

Despite his warm words Friday, two advisers said, Trump was livid when he learned of the allegations against Porter, and referred to his disgraced former aide in one phone call as "bad garbage".
