New Campus' Glass Walls Giving Trouble To Apple Employees

  • Apple got a painful reminder that design and safety aren't friends

Although the campus opened last September for the 10th anniversary iPhone introduction, it was done under a temporary occupancy permit, and Apple employees just started moving in last month.

Apple's new 175-acre headquarters, centred on a glass ring which hosts 12,000 staff, has become an architectural fascination since the first designs were unveiled seven years ago. The interior work spaces, known as "pods", are also made of glass.

There is one slight problem with going full "futuristic spaceship" with the design, though: The employees keep smacking into the glass walls of the workspaces inside.

When Apple's design chief Jony Ive was asked about the new Apple Park HQ's structure, he told the Wired last May that it was an achievement to "make a building where so many people can connect and collaborate and walk and talk".

I'd imagine bumping into these glass panes hurt quite a lot, although it's not clear if Apple will be taking any actions to better protect employees. They are created to foster collaboration among the 13,000 Apple employees it houses. Collisions have been one very clear downside of Apple's $427 million spaceship office in Cupertino, according to a story out of Bloomberg.

Place thousands of people distracted by iPhones in a building that is mostly transparent, and perhaps the results are inevitable.

Bloomberg reports staff have even used Post-It notes to mark the glass doors, but the notes were later taken down.

Apple Park was designed by famed architect Norman Foster, based on a vision by late company co-founder Steve Jobs. Another person familiar with the situation said there are other markings to identify the glass.

California law says that "employees shall be protected against the hazard of walking through glass by barriers or by conspicuous durable markings", but the company has not been subject to citations, according to US Occupational Safety and Health Administration data.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.

The "dumbass walks into a glass door" bit is so hack that it was on Two and a Half Men before Charlie Sheen went all AIDS-crazy and tried to strangle Chuck Lorre or whatever.
