That's what is happening in Europe, as well.

Ministers of health of 11 countries will meet on 20 February 2018 to discuss working together to achieve the goals set out in the European Vaccine Action Plan (EVAP) by 2020, including measles and rubella elimination.

Experts say that to control measles, 95 percent of the population must be vaccinated or immune because of a past infection. In 2016, only about one-third of people in that country had received two doses of the vaccine against measles.

But social media has helped spread incorrect information about vaccine effectiveness and safety.

For those who do contract the disease, its initial symptoms include a high fever, beginning about 10 to 12 days after exposure to the virus.

And countries with fewer resources to provide vaccines have trouble getting them even to people who want them. Romania had the most, with 5,562, followed by Italy, with 5,006, and Ukraine, with 4,767.

The surge in measles cases in 2017 included large outbreaks (100 or more cases) in 15 of the 53 countries in the Region.
