The court said that anyone who is unable to fulfil the requirements of Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution - which state that a member of the parliament should be "truthful" and "righteous" - can not hold any public office, including the post of a party head.

While #MujhayKyunNikala trended on Twitter following the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif as Prime Minister of Pakistan a year ago, this recent verdict stirred Twitteratis to generate several hashtags to express their opinions over the recent political development.

The court ruled that a person disqualified under Article 62 and 63 can not serve as the head of a political party, reported Geo TV.

Despite the fact that the Supreme Court's short order consists of only nine paragraphs, it has already put the upcoming Senate elections in jeopardy.

The decision was taken on Wednesday by the 3-member court in Islamabad, which ruled that under the constitution a disqualified politician can't be president of political party, local media reported.

"He will also become Prime Minister of the country". He said that procedures for Senate election were different from National Assembly elections and the new PML-N president can issue a certificate to the party candidates for Senate elections.

The parliament had paved the way for Sharif to resume his position as party chief following his disqualification from public office in 2017.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) spokesperson said that any decision regarding the Senate polls would be taken after issuance of the detailed court judgment and in view of all legal options available.

The Panamagate case, officially titled Imran Khan Niazi v. Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, was heard between 1 November 2016 and 23 February 2017.

Ruling PML-N, analysts react to SC judgement that renders a disqualified person ineligible to hold party head's office.

Control of both houses could allow the PML-N to change the constitution to make Sharif eligible to hold office again when the party contests general elections due later this year.

It comes months after the ruling PMLN party passed a law allowing Mr Sharif to remain at the helm despite being removed from the premiership over graft allegations last July.

While on the other side, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that he and his was being victimised in the name of justice.
