DCist, Gothamist revived by public radio

  • DNAinfo and Gothamist Are Back, Thanks to Public Radio

The move comes as part of a larger deal involving two other public radio outlets and Gothamist's network of local news sites - with KPCC in Pasadena, Calif., taking over LAist, and WAMU in Washington acquiring DCist. Reporters wanted to diversify their newsroom and provide job security, but they never made it to the bargaining table as Ricketts shut down the websites with a public letter posted online over their stories. The assets acquired will enable the stations to expand their digital footprint and support their shared missions to reflect and serve their listeners and the public.

With an urban vibrancy and a global perspective, WNYC is New York's public radio station, broadcasting and streaming award-winning journalism, groundbreaking audio programming and essential talk radio to the city and beyond. The deal was spearheaded by Gothamist founders Jake Dobkin and Jen Chung, and is being funded by two anonymous donors who have contributed an undisclosed sum to acquire the brands. "That resonates with us at WNYC, where we are committed to telling stories rooted in NY and that matter to New Yorkers".

"As one of the most trusted and reliable news sources serving Washington, D.C., WAMU connects Washingtonians with each other and the world", said JJ Yore, General Manager, WAMU. In a statement, WAMU Senior Director of Content and News Andi McDaniel said the acquisition will help add to its digital presence, while at the same time expanding coverage at the "neighborhood level".

Gothamist, founded in 2003 with a focus on arts and culture, had been purchased by DNAinfo and Mr. Ricketts earlier in 2017, only months before he shut it down.

Billionaire investor Joe Ricketts, the founder and former CEO of TD Ameritrade, started DNAinfo in 2009.

A KPCC spokesman said in an e-mail that the station hopes to have original and compelling content on the LAist website in the very near future. Without going into details of the transaction, he said each public radio station had some "skin in the game".

The staffs of DNAinfo and Gothamist are members of the WGA, while WNYC's employees are part of SAG-AFTRA. Then, desperation: who could fill the local news void left by the shuttering of Gothamist and DNAInfo?
