Then, in a statement released on Wednesday, the Yobe state government said they had been told by the army an unspecified number of girls had been rescued from the "terrorists who abducted them".

"On the issue of the number of missing girls, we can not give what we are not sure of, until we hear from their parents, we can not say this is the number", Mohammed told reporters shortly after he arrived at Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Thursday afternoon. But the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, while speaking to journalists on Friday, apologized to villagers, admitting the girls were still unaccounted for.

He said, "We further appeal to anyone with information that will assist in locating the girls not to delay in sharing same with the military and security services". We rushed out and ran towards the gate. That case drew global attention to the nine-year insurgency, which has sparked what the United Nations has called one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

Four days after an attack on a girls' school in Dapchi, Yobe State, President Muhammadu Buhari has spoken publicly about it.

Armed Boko Haram fighters invaded Dapchi on Monday evening, forcing residents, including students of Government Girls Secondary school, to flee into the bushes.

"We will provide more details about their number and condition in due course", Nigeria's federal government said in a statement Wednesday.

While Nigerians are appalled by APC's recourse to false indices in critical sectors, it is, however, to say the least, an inexcusable height of wickedness to give a vulnerable people a false assurance of security when they are actually in danger.

However, the group continues to launch attacks in the country's northeast, and its leader remains at large.

Some of the 276 girls kidnapped from a boarding school in Chibok managed to escape, others were released following negotiations while approximately 100 are still in captivity with reports of some of them marrying their abductors and giving birth to children fathered by them.

He calls the attack a national disaster.

The kidnapping of the Dapchi schoolgirls may have been carried out in the hope of securing a similar multi-million euro ransom, said one of the people briefed on the matter. Unlike at Chibok, however, the army responded quickly at Dapchi.

The president's reaction was contained in a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES by the presidency.

Abubakar Shehu, whose niece is among those missing from Dapchi, said a search of surrounding villages had drawn a blank. "Now the story has changed", said Ali Yari.

"But we shall continue to pray for the security agencies to recover the missing kids who are already missing their classes coupled with the amount of dangers they would be exposed to".
