  • Shahbaz hails Sharif's role

Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb Monday said the PML-N would announce its new president after the party meeting today (Tuesday).

But the party presented a united front with the election of Shahbaz, while Nawaz was appointed the party's guide "for life". "Raja Zafarul Haq, PM Abbasi & CM SS proposal elicited a resounding approval from CWC", Maryam Nawaz told.

Although there is no provision for the post of "quaid" in the party, the Central Working Committee of the PML (N) created this post for Sharif.

Interestingly, the SC ruling had rendered all decisions Nawaz Sharif had taken in the capacity of the party chief as null and void.

As a effect, Senate tickets distributed by Nawaz also stand null and void, further casting doubt whether Senate elections will be held on March 3.

The Sharif clan and their supporters have repeatedly denied allegations of corruption, suggesting Nawaz is the victim of a conspiracy driven by Pakistan's powerful military establishment.

After his disqualification as prime minister, the ruling PML-N amended the Constitution to allow him to retain his chairmanship of the party. "So far, Mr Sharif has not been banned from attending any party meetings", he remarked. "Maryam's name was not considered for the slot as she is too young to handle the party at this stage", a PML-N leader said.

The meeting also approved making Nawaz PML-N "Quaid" (top leader) for lifetime and also paid tributes to his service for the party, country and democracy.

Nawaz Sharif had picked Shehbaz Sharif as acting president of the party last day.

Then the party's general council is required to elect a president within 45 days.

Asked to throw more light on the identity of these "characters", the PML-N leader referred to the claims made by Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai who had allegedly made accusations in this regard. In 2006, he was again elected as the party president. His appointment ended speculations since Nawaz's disqualification that there was rift within the Sharif family and he was going to make his daughter Maryum or ailing wife Kulsoom PML-N's head.
