Vivo's Apex concept phone gives you a peek into the future

01 March, 2018, 12:08 | Author: Janis Wilson
  • This phone of the future has a pop up selfie camera and half-screen fingerprint scanner

Flip over the front-facing camera and in 0.8 seconds an 8-megapixel lens rises up from the phone's top edge.

Also, there is no word about the specifications of the Vivo APEX.

To support the all-screen design and avoid placing a fingerprint reader on the back, Vivo has also included an in-screen fingerprint reader like the one it showed off at CES with Synaptics and was included in the X20 Plus UD for the Chinese market. On the Apex, the target takes up nearly half the bottom of the phone, instead of just a small circle. Vivo is employing something similar that it calls Screen SoundCasting Technology that sounds the vibrations right through the display.

There's another party trick up the sleeve of this in-display fingerprint scanner though, with Vivo saying the technology "enables new usage scenarios, such as the new dual-fingerprint scanning feature. for even greater strengthened security". It argues that it should save on power, reduce sound leakage and offer a superior audio experience. The Vivo APEX FullView is the first production smartphone to achieve this ratio.

The in-display scanner doesn't seem to be as fast as the conventional fingerprint sensor, but it's safe to assume that it will improve once the technology advances. The phone has an expanded area of an in-screen fingerprint scanner on the screen itself. If you thought the OPPO N1's swiveling camera was weird, it has nothing on the Vivo APEX. It doesn't need extra room on your phone and the OEM has more flexibility with its installation as it can be placed anywhere under the display. And the third piece of technology is a retractable selfie camera.

This is an wonderful combination of technologies to enable a future of bezel-free smartphones.

With 98 percent screen-to-body ratio, Vivo Apex gives us an all-screen experience without the interference of bulky bezels, camera and other sensors, and even the unsightly notch. This means your ear needn't be in one specific spot when taking calls, it can touch any part of the phone - as we found when trying it out on a sample call.

Another interesting thing about the Vivo Apex concept phone is the SoundCastin Technology.

With the Vivo Apex, using the fingerprint scanner built into the display is easier, which will be an especially useful feature in large phone as you won't have to awkwardly shuffle the device in-hand to reach the scanner.

We've watched phone bezel shrink over recent years, but the Apex concept takes that idea and runs with it. A limitation that requires users to place their fingers over an on-screen icon in order to use the feature.
