Texans deny report of boycotting players who protested anthem

  • Nearly the entire Texans team kneeled during the national anthem the Sunday following owner Bob McNair’s comments

Jerome Solomon of the Houston Chronicle spoke with two NFL agents who have been led to believe the Texans are not interested in any free agent players who have chosen to take part in national anthem protests.

"A recent report that suggests the Houston Texans would not sign a player who has protested in support of social justice issues is categorically false and without merit", the team said in a statement.

The Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins on Tuesday rejected reports they have taken a stance against players who protest during the playing of the United States national anthem.

That said, owner Bob McNair's comments last season likening NFL players to prison inmates took the league by storm and justifiably did not sit well with most.

McNair subsequently apologized and said in a statement he "never meant to offend anyone" and "was not referring to our players".

In response to inaccurate reports regarding potential free agent signings. "I'm 100 percent with these players". With the NFL's free agency period opening next week, the Chronicle's report could potentially damage the team's reputation even among players who did not stage protests but who sympathize with those who did.

"During the past season, we received assurances from both commissioner Roger Goodell and the chairman of the management council, John Mara, that the right of players to demonstrate would be protected".

During that game, many Houston players took a knee and linked arms for the national anthem, after staging nearly no such demonstrations before then.

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem in 2016 in protest at perceived racial injustice and police brutality.
